Hadley Businesses Like Bikes!

Meryl Mandell from MassDOT in the Pioneer Valley shared with us this update about their “Business By Bike” event:

“Greeting all. I’m happy to report that there will be at least six businesses represented at our first Business By Bike event held jointly with Whole Foods Market (a couple more are still deciding and several were disappointed that they were unavailable that day). The event is scheduled from 1-4 pm in the grassy area behind the Whole Foods Market (WFM) store in Hadley, directly adjacent to the egress path for the Norwottuck Rail Trail. There has been a good amount of publicity about this event by both the Bay State Bike Week organizers and WFM, so hopefully we’ll get a good turnout. The weather is a bit iffy for tomorrow, so you may want to give some thought to bringing a small tent to cover your displays.

I will be at WFM for noon on Saturday, and there will be two WFM staff available as well to provide assistance and refreshments. WFM will also have a sandwich board in front of their store on the Rte 9 side directing people out behind the building to our event.”

Barnstable Village Tunes Up Their Bikes

The week hasn’t even begun, but folks on the Cape have their bikes lubed, tuned and ready.  Lev Malakhoff at the Cape Cod Commission writes:

“Bike Week is off to a sunny start on Cape Cod.  In Barnstable Village several County employees brought their bikes in for minor tune-ups.  Chain cleaning & lube, brake adjustments, topping off tires and words of encouragement were provided for Bike Week participants.  Seen in the background, the Bike Week banner was on public display for the first time to recognize the efforts of MassBike, MassDOT, and local partners on the Cape such as the Cape Cod Commission and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (creator of the banner).”

Cape Cod Challenge: Can You Beat Bob?

Courtesy of bikeandthelike.com

MassBike just received an update from the Cape’s Bay State Bike Week Coordinator, Lev Malakhoff:

“We’re excited to be a part of this year’s Baystate Bikeweek. On Wednesday, I’ll be asking the Barnstable County Commissioners to sign a proclamation of support for “Cape Cod Bikeweek.” It’s not a coincidence that Cape Cod Bikeweek takes place at that same time (May 14-20). It’s just our way of ‘branding’ the week with a local flavor and recognize the specialness of biking on the Cape.

“The first official Cape Cod Bikeweek occurred in 1996 – simultaneously with Massachusetts Bikeweek (and National Bikeweek). That year we ran a competition for County employees known as “Beat Bob.” One of our employees, known as Bob, lived in the Outer Cape and had a 25 or so mile commute. Employees who rode more miles than Bob that week received special “I Beat Bob” certificates. Prizes included donated jam from a local jam kitchen and a boat trip donated by one of the Barnstable County Commissioners. This year’s t-shirts and ankle bands are a definite improvement (unless you’re a jam addict!).”

Old Colony Region Has Spoken: We Like Bikes!

Already last year’s record of 110 events for Bay State Bike Week has been shattered, and more keep streaming in.  The Old Colony region is doing their part, with two kick-off events being held in the area.  An event organizer from Old Colony Planning Commission, Rodrigo Marion, had a few things to note about the upcoming activities:

“This year we are excited to be part of the Bay State Bike Week with two grand KICK-OFF events in the Old Colony region. The Bay State Bike Week activities will help us promote our new sustainable transportation policies. The Old Colony Planning Council (OCPC) believes that with this lifestyle choice, we will enhance our personal economy and health, reduce  our carbon foot print, and will help establishing a trend to reduce our dependency of fossil fuel.

“Our 2011 Regional Transportation Plan survey found that 50 percent of respondents want more federal spending on bicycle and pedestrian facilities; 70 percent support requiring roads to have bike lanes or paths, even if it means less space for cars and trucks; and 43 percent would like to see more recreational trails and parks. OCPC has set a goal of increasing the use of non-motorized transportation modes by 20 percent by 2035, compared with 1990.”

MassBike is excited to see the community support bicycling, and look forward to providing momentum to surpass their goal of a 20% increase.

Bay State Bike Week 2011

The 2nd annual Bay State Bike Week is set for May 14-20, a week of celebrating bicycle transportation across the Commonwealth.

Last year was the first year that MassDOT and the State Bicycle Advocacy group MassBike partnered to make Bay State Bike Week a truly statewide celebration and, as we learned, unique in the country.

This year Bay State Bike Week will build on the successful 2010 effort and a long history of Bike Week celebrations across the Commonwealth, as MassDOT, MassBike, and MassRIDES, the statewide travel options program, collaborate again on Bike Week rides and other events throughout Massachusetts. This collaboration enables these organizations to work together to get the word out as widely as possible, and to broaden the scope of Bike Week events.

Biking as a mode of transportation is safe, economical, healthy, environmentally friendly, fast, and fun! Check out the Bike Week website at baystatebikeweek.org to find information for event organizers and participants.

Event organizers are asked to submit your event for the website’s statewide calendar! In addition, watch for information on how to receive cool stuff for your event, including t-shirts, reflectors and posters while supplies last. Organizers will also provide ideas and advice on organizing new events.

May is fast approaching, so start planning now! Mark May 14th to May 20th on your calendar for Bay State Bike Week and check the website for more information.

It’s not too early to start planning for Bay State Bike Week 2011!

We hope you will join us this May 14th to 20th for Bay State Bike Week, a week when Massachusetts will celebrate bicycle transportation!

In 2011, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition (MassBike) will again collaborate to make Bay State Bike Week an exciting statewide happening, with rides and other events in every corner of Massachusetts. This partnership between MassDOT, the state transportation department, and MassBike, Massachusetts’ statewide bicycling advocacy group, enables the two organizations to work together to get the word out as widely as possible, and to broaden the scope of Bike Week events.

To kick off the planning we’re launching the 2011 Bay State Bike Week website at www.baystatebikeweek.org. In the coming months we’ll be adding information for event organizers and participants. In addition, watch for information on how to receive cool stuff for your event. We’ll also provide you with ideas and advice on organizing new events.

We are all excited about promoting biking as a mode of transportation; it’s safe, it’s economical, it’s healthy, it’s environmentally-friendly, it’s fast, and it’s fun! May will be here before we know it, so start planning now! Mark May 14th to May 20th on your calendar for Bay State Bike Week and check the website for more information.

Bay State Bike Week is an initiative of GreenDOT and of the National award-winning Massachusetts Healthy Transportation Compact.
