You can now register for MassBike’s 3rd Annual Summer Century & Family Fun Ride!

We are welcoming riders of all levels to come out and enjoy a great day of riding, while supporting bike advocacy in Massachusetts.

We’ve updated our routes and have great rides planned for everyone. You can choose from from 12, 21, 42, 63, and 100 mile rides. The routes will traverse the heart of early American history, from Paul Revere’s Ride through Lexington and Concord to nearby battlefields. Longer rides visit the towns and villages that sent the first Minutemen.

Plus, by joining in the MassBike Summer Century & Family Fun Ride, you’ll be helping to make bicycling better in Massachusetts. All proceeds go to support MassBike’s bicycling advocacy. MassBike works through legislation, education, and infrastructure projects to get more people on bicycles and to make our roads and paths safer. Your support is important to making sure that bicyclists are protected in Massachusetts.

Just like last year’s ride, all rides have rolling start times for the convenience and safety of riders. The start window for Century (100 miles) riders will be 7-8:30 A.M., Metric century (62 miles) riders 8-9:30 A.M. and 40 mile riders 9-10:30 A.M. These rides feature arrowed routes with rest stops and cue sheets. Family rides of 10 and 20 miles will start in guided groups from 10-11 A.M., although families are welcome to follow the routes on their own.

After the great day of riding, lunch will be provided by Redbones Barbecue. Preregister today and get a Summer Century t-shirt.

All types of bicyclists are encouraged to join us and support the fantastic work of MassBike. With your help, we can make bicycling better in the Bay State. Enjoy the ride! Find out more info about the ride here.

As the days cool off, the night falls sooner, and the leaves start to change color, what many consider to be prime New England biking weather comes to the Bay State. The MassBike Spins Series is looking for members and other partners to create opportunities for folks to get out on their bikes all around the state. Rides can be any length, and creative themes and fun stops are encouraged.

In return for organizing the ride as a “MassBike Spins Series” event, MassBike can provide insurance and advertise it on our calendar and newsletter. More importantly, however, we’ll be getting MassBikers out on the road with the cool breeze whipping through their helmets.

MassBike held its 2nd Annual Summer Century & Family Fun Ride last Saturday, July 30th and it was a huge success! We had over 300 riders join us for a fun ride, beautiful weather, and good food. Riders took on routes from 12 to 100 miles which traversed the heart of early American history, from Paul Revere’s Ride through Lexington and Concord and to nearby battlefields. Longer rides visited the towns and villages that sent the first Minutemen.

With the success of the ride, the proceeds help make MassBike better advocates for bicyclists across Massachusetts. MassBike works through legislation, education, and infrastructure projects to get more people on bicycles and to make our roads and paths safer. Your support was important to making sure that bicyclists are protected in Massachusetts!

One reason our event was so successful was because of our fundraisers who went the extra mile to help us out! In addition, a big thanks goes out to all of our board members and volunteers who helped to organize the event and make sure that everything went smoothly on Saturday.

We also want to thank our fantastic sponsors who donated their products and services! Thanks goes out to Redbones BBQ, Ride Studio Cafe, Luna Bar, Food Should Taste Good, Jason & Fischer, and Mass Land Law, who helped provide support and fuel our riders throughout the day.

We’ll be reviewing this year’s rider feedback (which you can send to century@massbike.org) and will begin our planning for next year’s ride. We’ll be posting photos as we get them. If you have any you’d like to share, please send them to century@massbike.org.

Thanks to all our riders for joining us!

All rides (12, 23, 45, 62 and 100 routes) leave from – and return to – Lexington High School. The routes will traverse the heart of early American history, from Paul Revere’s Ride through Lexington and Concord and to nearby battlefields. Longer rides visit the towns and villages that sent the first Minutemen. As you leave in the morning, Ride Studio Cafe will be providing support for our riders. After the rides, everyone is invited to stay at Lexington High School for lunch and socializing. Food will be available until the mid-afternoon, so even intrepid century riders can share in the fun. After your ride, Redbones Barbecue is cooking up lunch (included with your registration) – their famous pulled pork, BBQ beef, and portobello sandwiches!

MassBike is gearing up for the 2011 riding season by scheduling our Spins Series Rides. Last weekend the season began with the Last Day of Winter Neponset Trail Spins Series Ride, and continues on April 9 with the Good Riddance Winter, Hello Spring Ride. Join us for a ride to appreciate Boston’s spring scenery. Or check out below on how MassBike can help you with your own ride.

Saturday, April 09, 2011 – 11:00a-2:00p. Rain cancels, rain date: Sunday, April 10, 2011.

Say good riddance to the long and cold winter we’ve had in Massachusetts by joining MassBike to celebrate the (hopeful) arrival of spring! We will ride through Beacon Hill, Back Bay, the Fens, the Southwest Corridor, and the Arnold Arboretum to enjoy the spring air and budding greenery. The ride is about 7 miles, and paced for everyone to be able to enjoy the ride. Bring friends and family, all are invited. We will meet at the State House entrance (24 Beacon Street) at 11:00am.

If you do not wish to ride in, the State House is accessible by T from the Red Line’s Park Street stop and the #43 and #55 buses (check bus schedule for Saturdays @ mbta.com). When we reach the Arboretum, the Orange Line’s Forest Hill’s stop is easily accessible if you do not wish to ride home. The ride is scheduled for a Saturday, so bikes on the T are no problem.

Bring your helmet; they are required for all MassBike Spins rides.

Please RSVP to rides@massbike.org if you want to join us on the ride.

We look forward to a great riding season with all of last year’s favorites, like the Tour de Graves, and some new rides, like the Bastille Day Ride which will end at the Bastille Day street party outside of the French Cultural Center on Marlborough Street.

Interested in doing a ride in Massachusetts? Group rides are a fun way to introduce the joys of cycling to new cyclists and are a great way to strengthen the cycling community in Massachusetts.

MassBike can help by offering ride insurance to groups and individuals. You can find out more about making your ride a part of the MassBike Spins Series here.

We hope to see everyone come out for MassBike’s 2011 Spins Series Rides. Ride safe!

Our first Summer Century & Family Ride is in the books! Almost 400 riders joined us for a great day of cycling, fun, and food. Even the weather cooperated for once (a rarity for MassBike events)! Thank you to everyone who rode – with your help we raised over $9,200 dollars to support MassBike’s advocacy efforts. Many MassBike members participated, and 30 new members joined up on the spot! From racers, to veteran distance riders, to families, to people just out for a leisurely ride, to some on their very first group ride, we had them all! Which is especially great because we represent all of you!

We could not have pulled it off without the dedication of our awesome volunteers. The event was organized by MassBike’s Board of Directors, and you saw many of them working hard at Lexington High School and the rest stops in Groton and at Great Brook Farm State Park. We want to particularly recognize Bob Dangel, our Treasurer, who led the entire effort and really made the event happen.

We also want to recognize the support of our great sponsors who donated much-appreciated products and services to the event: Redbones BBQ, Ride Studio Cafe, Iggy’s Bread of the World, Honest Tea, Luna Bar/Team Luna Chix, Landry’s Bicycles, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, and the New England Mountain Bike Patrol.

In case you were wondering, here is the breakdown of riders. It was a really good mix at all ability levels:

Total Riders: 397

12 mile: 34
22 mile: 61
47 mile: 76
62 mile: 126
100 mile: 100

For a grand total of roughly 22,602 miles ridden! Or from our downtown Boston office almost all the way around the earth! (If you left Boston heading north, you would make it about as far as New York City.)

We hope everyone enjoyed the event! We learned a lot, and will make it even better next time. If you have any comments or suggestions for next year, please let us know at events@massbike.org.

Here are some pictures from the day:
